One of the two biggest clashes in Sri Lanka chess meant to happen during 2nd,3rd ,4th , 10th & 11th at university of Moratuwa , well known - Sri Lanka National B. As the name implies this is the pre step for the Sri Lanka National team selections. Best heads throughout the country took a part in this tournament being quailed after several zonal tournaments. Some entered directly on the condition of their top national and international level performances, Including Rajeendra Kalugampitiya who represented university of Peradeniya.
This time almost all the top rated Sri Lankan players who had had marked their excellence in previous national tournaments were in the battle of brain storming, aiming for the Sri Lanka National Chess Championship. Collecting one by one Rajeendra was in hunt for points and was successfully gained 3.5 out of 4 when he was to play against G.C.Anuruddha of Sri Lanka Navy who was a well experienced player as well as a former national champion. Showing out his colours Rajeendra marked his win over Anuruddha, and also the succeeding round against Udith Jayasundara another young star in Sri Lanka chess.
By the end of first half Rajeendra Kalugampitiya was clearlyin lead with 5.5 upon 6. Everything he had to do after that was to ensure his lead without giving away any point which he could manage very well till the end including another remarkable win against Isuru Alahakoon of S.L.Navy at round 8.
Finally, after 10 rounds Rajeendra Kalugampitiya brought the National B Championship to Pera which was the maiden in both his chess career and in Pera chess. He could win 6 games and 4 draws without losing any out of 10, uplifting his rating with an additional 19.
We wish you all the best Rajeendra – as the Captain of Pera chess and as the President of Sports Council to lead our teams when we pack back the Interuniversity Championship this time for the sake of Pera.
