Pera In To The Semis

The reigning champions of University rugby put up a unsatisfactory performance today in the last quarter final match of the Inter University Championship. The home team was under enormous pressure in the first few minutes and took their time coming into the game. While they only scored 3 tries in the first half they were forced to defend their own goal line from an aggressive UvaWellassa team. University of UvaWellassa made the Pera team scamper in defense with some powerful kicks courtesy of their fly half Madugalle. Pera number eight, MelanKulatunga scored all three tries of the first half and converted two to make the score 19-0.
The second half did give witness to a more organized attack by Peradeniya but were forced to back down on several occasions after coming dangerously close to the try line due to good solid defense by the visitors. The Pera team did put up a fabulous show of defense not letting the opposition anywhere near their goal line but only score four tries in the second half themselves. Kulatunga scored his fourth while he converted two more. Final tally was 43-0. University of Peradeniya will meet University of Rajarata next week for the semi final.
The other try scorers for University of Peradeniya were Hasith Wickramasinghe, Amila Senanayake and Asanka Ekanayake.
